BARIATRIC SURGERY RECOVERY

Bariatric surgery recovery requires a short hospital stay followed by three to five weeks of minimized physical activity. During this time, you will continue to become acclimated to a new diet and prepare for the healthier lifestyle necessary to maintain your results. The precise timeline of recovery differs from patient to patient based on their capacity to heal, the extent of surgery, the type of bariatric surgery performed, and other factors. Dr. H. Joseph Naim in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Long BeachCA, explains the basic principles of recovery in order to help you understand what to expect following bariatric surgery.

A Timeline of Recovery

Dr. Naim performs minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, a technique that minimizes post-operative discomfort and results in a faster recovery than traditional surgical procedures. Your recovery will involve initial downtime followed by the adoption and continued use of a special diet and other lifestyle changes:

The Day of Surgery

In most cases, you will stay in the hospital for one to two nights. During this time, you may experience some discomfort. IV and oral medications can help to minimize inflammation and pain. At this time, you will consume a liquid diet.

The First Week

After you return home, you should spend time resting. Taking short, slow walks can promote healing. At this time, you can start to introduce pureed and soft foods into your diet. Nonetheless, you should closely follow your medical team’s instructions and be cautious as you increase the variety of foods you eat.

Dr. Naim and his team are here to provide the guidance you need at every stage of your journey to improved health.

The First Month

Typically, patients can return to work and other non-strenuous activities about two weeks after surgery. The reintroduction of solid foods depends on many factors that must be carefully considered by Dr. Naim. After about a month, some patients can begin slowly including more solid foods in their diet. With Dr. Naim's approval, you may be able to resume normal physical activity at this time.
